What happens when you trade the traditional college path for the world of hair artistry?

For Maddie Marissa, it was the exact reset she needed to break out of a creative rut and build her own universe.

As the co-founder of Mew Mew Salon, Maddie has spent her career dodging the industry’s obsession with "perfection" to focus on something much more valuable: raw, authentic self-expression.

We sat down with her to talk about fighting imposter syndrome, chasing hyperfixations, and creating spaces where clients feel seen.

Finding a Home Behind the Chair

For some, the calling to hair styling is instant. For Maddie, it took a detour.

"I’ve always loved experimenting with the way I looked and doing my friends' hair and makeup," Maddie recalls. "Funny enough, becoming a hairstylist was actually my mom’s idea. I spent a year in college feeling completely lost, and she suggested cosmetology because she knew how much I loved the beauty industry."

Once she transitioned to the floor, the trajectory of her career completely shifted.

"Everything clicked. I loved that every day was different. I got to be creative, meet interesting people, and help someone express a version of themselves they might not have felt comfortable sharing before. It was the first thing that felt natural to me, and I’ve never really looked back."

The Myth of a Perfect Line

In an industry driven by pristine social media feeds and flawless techniques, finding your voice means learning to tune out the noise.

For Maddie, that meant tackling the internal roadblocks that every true creator eventually faces: creative burnout and imposter syndrome.

“One of the hardest things as an artist is learning when to stop chasing perfection and appreciate what’s already there. I’ve had to learn to give myself the same grace.”

To keep that internal pressure from stalling her craft, Maddie embraces a strategy of intentional distraction, or what she calls "side quests."

Fighting the Monotone with Curiosity

Maintaining an edge in your work requires a commitment to constant evolution.

"I think the biggest thing is staying curious and continuing to find inspiration in the things you love," she explains. "Whether it’s the hair community, fashion, film, or travel, I love collecting inspiration from different places and seeing how ideas evolve and find new life over time."

Welcome to Mew Mew Salon

That blending of influences ultimately materialized into Maddie's proudest achievement to date: opening Mew Mew Salon alongside her best friend and co-founder, Ginny.

"Our goal was to create a safe, inclusive space where people could feel welcomed, celebrated, and cared for," Maddie says. "She’s a minimalist, I’m a maximalist, and somehow she still trusts me with the decor."
