True creative breakthroughs rarely happen inside your comfort zone. For Barcelona-based hair artist Shego Star, pushing boundaries means pulling inspiration from high-fashion runways. It means embracing chaos and throwing out the traditional rulebook.
In an exclusive feature for Elevate Hair, Shego Star breaks down the creative process behind her striking looks.
From runway-inspired color blocking to the philosophy of experimental design, here is how she brings high-concept fashion to life through hair.
The Inspiration: Translating Rick Owens AW26 into Hair Architecture

"The starting point was Rick Owens’ AW26 'Tower' collection," Shego Star shares. "I was inspired by the strong contrasts, neon colors, and cyberpunk energy of the collection."
Instead of just admiring the clothes, she wanted to mimic that raw feeling on a completely different canvas.
"I wanted to translate that visual language into hair through strong color blocking placement and graphic shapes."
The Creative Process: Where the Magic Happens

For many session stylists, the final image on set is the ultimate goal. For Shego Star, the true fulfillment comes much earlier in the journey. She loves the solitary hours spent working with the palette.
"Definitely the color work," she says. "For me, that’s when the concept really comes to life, even before the model wears it."
That quiet phase allows the hair to become a collaborative partner rather than just a canvas.
"I love that moment because it’s just me and the hair," she explains. "I can let myself go, experiment, and have fun."
Fighting Complacency: Breaking the Monotony of Hair Design

It is incredibly easy for artists to fall into a routine. To fight off artistic burnout and monotony, Shego Star actively practices detachment from perfection. She starts by silencing her inner critic.
"By letting myself go in my work and trying not to judge myself too much," she explains. "I try not to set limits and to stay open to where the process takes me."
When you let go of strict expectations, mistakes turn into features.
"It’s important not to get frustrated when a result doesn’t turn out exactly as expected, because sometimes it ends up being even better."
The Takeaway: A Manifesto for Creative Hair Artists

Shego Star did not take a linear path into the industry. She was deeply immersed in visual arts from childhood, working across painting, nail art, and tattooing. It was not until she lived with a hairdresser that she realized the boundless, expressive potential of hair as a primary medium.
Now, she wants other stylists to find that same sense of liberation. She believes true growth requires a willingness to play.
"I want people to take whatever resonates with them personally, but if I had to say one thing, it would be: Always have fun and experiment. There is no right or wrong way to create."
"There are no mistakes in a creative journey."
